How to Evaluate Marble Slabs from Online Photos

Choosing marble from a screen is now a normal part of buying stone, especially when the supplier is in another country. Photos are useful, but they are not the same as standing in front of the slab. This guide shows how to get the most from slab photos and what to confirm before you order.

Why photos can mislead

Lighting, camera settings, editing and even your own screen can change how a stone appears. Treat color in a photo as a guide, not a guarantee. A photo is much better at showing the pattern and layout of a slab than its exact shade.

What a useful set of photos includes

  • The whole slab: a close-up alone cannot show how veining runs across the full surface.
  • The whole bundle: this helps you judge how much the slabs vary.
  • Close-ups: these help you check the surface, edges and any repairs.
  • An identifying code: this links the photo to the specific material you are buying.

Check the veining

Look at the direction, scale and movement of the veins. Ask yourself:

  • Does the main pattern fit the size and shape of the area?
  • Will the veins connect well across joints?
  • Will important pieces be cut from the areas you like most?

Mark up a simple layout if the pattern matters. A slab can look great as a whole and still be difficult to use if the best section falls in the wrong place.

Check color consistency

Compare slabs next to each other, not only one at a time. Natural variation is normal, but you should know how much to expect. If your area needs several bundles, ask whether they come from the same block or lot.

Check the surface

Look closely for cracks, chips, filled areas and resin work. These are not always defects. Resin and mesh are common in some stones, but they should match what you expected and what the job requires. If you are unsure about something in a photo, ask for another angle or a short video.

Check the numbers

A good listing should help you confirm the practical details:

  • Stone name and finish
  • Thickness
  • Slab size and number of slabs
  • Total area and weight

Check whether the slab size is the usable size, and allow for edges and cutting. Weight matters too, because it affects transport. Our guide on how to buy marble slabs from Turkey explains how this fits into planning an order.

Remember the finish

A finish can change how color and veining appear. If you are comparing different finishes, read our guide to polished, honed, brushed and leather surfaces.

What to ask before you confirm

  1. Are these photos of the exact slabs I will receive?
  2. Are the photos recent, and were they edited?
  3. Can you send a video in natural light?
  4. Are there any repairs or defects I should know about?
  5. How will the slabs be packed for shipping?

For a large or color-critical job, a site visit or an independent inspection may also be worth the cost.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trust the color in a photo?
Use it as a guide only. Request more photos or a video, and consider a visit or sample if exact color matters.

Is a sample enough?
A sample can help with color and finish, but it cannot show the full pattern of a slab.

What if I buy several bundles?
Review each bundle, because variation can appear between them.
