Biril Grey Marble: A Homogeneous Grey Stone from Kayseri, Turkey

Grey marble can be calm and modern, or it can be dramatic and full of movement. Biril Grey sits at the calm end of that range. It is a grey marble with a very fine, sesame-like texture and a homogeneous appearance, quarried in the Kayseri region of central Turkey.

Develi Marble supplies this stone through our group company, Nirvana Doğaltaşlar Madencilik. This guide explains what the stone offers, where it may suit a project and what to confirm before you buy.

A note on the name

You may see this stone listed in different ways. On our Turkish-language site it appears as Biril Gri, and also under the heading Bej Mermer, which means beige marble, even though the stone itself is described as grey. Stone names often follow trade habits rather than exact color. If you are comparing offers, look at photos of the real material rather than relying on the name.

Biril Grey should also not be confused with other stones that share part of its name, such as our Biril Brechia, which is listed as a brown marble. If you see a similar name in a quote, ask exactly which stone is being offered.

What Biril Grey looks like

The defining features are its grey color and even, finely speckled structure. In Turkish, we describe it as susamlı, which refers to a fine texture similar to sesame seeds. Instead of bold veins crossing the slab, the stone gives a more consistent surface.

That does not mean every slab will be identical. Any natural stone can vary in tone and texture from one block or bundle to another. If you are covering a large area, review real material from the same supply and agree on what level of variation is acceptable.

The quarry

The quarry lies between the villages of Dadaloğlu and Karamuklu, in the Tomarza district of Kayseri. It is about 62 km from our factory and 55 km from Develi. Having both quarry and processing in the same region helps us follow the stone from the block stage onward. We produce blocks here with export markets in mind, and the stone has seen demand from buyers in India and China.

Why choose a homogeneous grey marble?

A consistent stone can solve practical design problems that a heavily veined marble may not.

  • Large areas: an even pattern can help floors and walls read as one calm surface.
  • Repeated pieces: tiles and project pieces can be easier to arrange when strong veins do not need to line up.
  • Flexible layouts: with less dramatic pattern, cutting plans may be less restricted by where the veins fall.
  • Design neutrality: grey can pair well with wood, metal, white walls and darker accent stones.

The trade-off is that it offers less of the dramatic impact that a bold veined stone brings. If you want a marble that acts as the main feature on a wall, you might prefer a stone with more movement.

Finish and polish

We describe Biril Grey as taking a high polish, and polished slabs are the finish shown on our product page for this stone. A polished surface can bring out the color and create a clean, reflective look.

Polish is not automatically right for every location, though. It can be slippery when wet and can make scratches and acid marks more visible, particularly in busy areas. If you are thinking about another finish, ask about availability and request a sample, because finish can significantly change the appearance of a grey stone. Our guide to choosing a stone finish explains the main options.

Where it can be used

Biril Grey can be considered for a range of applications, including:

  • Interior floors and walls
  • Bathrooms and vanity areas
  • Kitchen surfaces, where the user accepts marble’s care needs
  • Project-sized pieces produced to your drawings

For floors, wet areas and any exterior use, confirm the finish, slip performance and suitability for your exact conditions. We have not published laboratory data for Biril Grey on our site, so if your project needs technical values, request them specifically and confirm that they apply to the stone you will receive.

Supply options

Biril Grey may be supplied in different forms, depending on the project and current availability:

  • Blocks: for buyers with their own processing.
  • Polished slabs: for fabricators and projects that want to choose and cut material locally.
  • Project-sized pieces: for jobs with final drawings and defined quantities.

Availability changes, and Biril Grey is not always listed in our online stock. Please ask about it directly. Our guide on full slabs and cut-to-size pieces can help you decide which form fits your job.

What to check before you order

  1. Color and tone: is the grey warm or cool under the light in your space? View the material in natural light if you can.
  2. Consistency: ask to see several slabs together, not just one.
  3. Surface condition: check for fissures, repairs and filled areas. Our guide to slab defects and repairs can help.
  4. Size and thickness: confirm that your largest pieces will fit within the actual material.
  5. Quantity: order enough for the whole area and add waste and spares. See how to calculate marble quantity.
  6. Batch approval: for larger projects, agree which material has been approved before it is shipped.

Care tips

As a marble, Biril Grey needs sensible care. Use a pH-neutral stone cleaner and wipe up acidic spills such as lemon juice and vinegar quickly. Ask your installer about sealing for your specific location. A sealer can help slow staining, but it does not make marble acid-proof. For commercial projects, agree on a cleaning plan with the operator before handover.
